Edgbaston's Green Appeal
Councillor Mike Whitby planted the first of 20 new trees outside the mixed-use development Edgbaston Mill, as part of Calthorpe Estates’ enhancement of one of Birmingham’s key roads.
A boulevard of trees is being created along Edgbaston Road to improve the public realm and environment around the nine-acre scheme. A canopy of London Plane trees will be planted, which are common to major international cities such as New York, Paris and London, and is a move welcomed by the Civic Society.
The trees will have considerable visual impact on the road due to the fact that they can grow up to 40 metres tall. A landscape designer will oversee the planting of the London Plane trees, which are popular for roadside locations due to their ability to withstand urban conditions.
The tree planting is part of Calthorpe Estates’ wider vision, championed by Chief Executive Richard Allen, to make the Calthorpe Estate the best place to live and work.
Every year specialist arboriculturists are commissioned to undertake tree monitoring as part of a replacement strategy on the Estate which protects the area’s ambiance.
The tree planting coincides with the completion of the first phase of the infrastructure package, which will enable construction to take place. Edgbaston Mill is due to complete in 2008 and will boast 41,805 sq m of residential, retail, leisure, A3, office and potential hotel space.
Cordwell Property Group is the joint developer for the commercial element of the scheme and Redrow Homes is developing the residential element, which will offer 344 luxury apartments.
