Full Planning Approval Granted For First Phase of £100 Million Retail and Leisure Destination
Calthorpe Estates has gained planning approval from Birmingham City Council for the first commercial phase of their £100 million Edgbaston Mill development.
The consent is for a 14,000 sq ft foodstore, 9,300 sq ft of retail and restaurants and 17,000 sq ft of leisure space within the first commercial phase of the 450,000 sq ft scheme situated opposite Edgbaston Cricket Ground.
David Povall, Calthorpe Estates’ Commercial Director commented: “The approval of the reserved matters application moves Edgbaston Mill one step closer to becoming a reality. The scheme promises to become a unique retail and leisure destination that Birmingham can be proud of and we are close to securing occupiers for all elements of this phase who are all very keen to locate to the site.”
Calthorpe Estates has been working with architects Crouch Butler on master-planning the commercial element of the site. Geoffrey Barrett, Director of Crouch Butler added, “Our aim has been to design a scheme fit for this world famous location, one which will match, if not surpass, similar areas in other major European cities. Edgbaston Mill will have a key role to play as a vibrant social hub linking Edgbaston’s sporting venues, cultural centres and green spaces.”
In total, Edgbaston Mill will offer 31,150 sq ft of leisure facilities, 34,700 sq ft of restaurant and retail space, a 14,000 sq ft foodstore, 64,500 sq ft of office space, a hotel of at least 120 bedrooms and more than 200,000 sq ft of residential space, which will offer 344 luxury apartments being developed by Redrow Homes.
Work is due to begin on the commercial element of the scheme, which is being developed with partners Cordwell Property Group, this summer and the scheme is scheduled to be completed in phases from 2008.
